Entry Level Health & Safety Specialist

Responsibilities

  • Report to Regional Safety Manager to develop and implement company health and safety policies, procedures and programs to enhance safety culture.
  • Provide leadership, guidance and technical support to branch operations regarding specific issues relative to health and safety programs and practices.
  • Conduct safety evaluations of Flynn project sites using documentation and standardized processes
  • As required, assist with the preparation and implementation of the site safety plan, and other safety related plans (Fall Protection Plans, Emergency Response, and Hazard Assessments). Work with project management to ensure site implementation of the Flynn Safety Program
  • Ensure that sub-contractors adhere to required safety standards in keeping with Flynn policy/legislation
  • Assess and manage Workers Comp cases through modified work programs and report LTI and medical aids.
  • Assess risks and trends in the workplace and implement corrective measures to reduce risks.
  • Participate, support and maintain Certificate of Recognition (COR) status.
  • Review or assist in establishing safety inspection schedules for tools, equipment & PPE to ensure safe operating conditions and compliance with current regulations
  • Assist with JHSC meetings with worker and employer representatives, initiate follow up and corrective action to ensure compliance and maintain effective communication with workers and employers.
  • In-house health and safety training with employees which includes employee orientation, employee coaching and fall protection.
  • Notify site supervision of all safety hazards observed or upcoming and give input on corrective actions
  • Maintain records of incidents and accidents and provide statistics for managers.
  • Identify, investigate, report and provide guidance relative to root causes for incidents, employee safety programs, regulatory compliance relative to health and safety.
  • Ensure the safe operation of equipment and adherence to maintenance schedules.
  • Advise on a range of specialist areas, e.g. fire regulations, fall protection, hazardous substances and safeguarding machinery

Desired Qualifications

  • Good working knowledge of OHSA, other Acts and related Federal, Provincial and local regulations, standards, legislation that govern Health and Safety compliance;
  • Formal education and/or training in Environmental Health and Safety, CRSP, CSO or equivalent experience
  • Minimum 1-3 years’ experience in a safety role within a construction environment
  • Experience with the COR process is considered a strong asset
  • Excellent communication skills, both oral and written;
  • Excellent problem solving and critical thinking skills;
  • Safety knowledge in Fall Protection, Fire Protection and WHMIS
  • Knowledge and practical experience in accident investigation
  • Ability to maintain appropriate levels of confidentiality and sensitive information;
  • Ability to work in a team environment, develop and maintain positive working relationships and articulate objectives;
  • Ability to time manage, prioritize and use sound judgment;
  • Ability to work effectively as part of a multi-disciplinary group and be a team player.
  • Proficient in personal computer software applications, including Microsoft Word, Excel, Power Point, Outlook;
  • Knowledge and experience in training in a group environment;
  • Strong ability to establish priorities and meet deadlines;
  • Detail oriented with excellent organization skills.
